DAYTIME

Whether they come from a middle or working-class background, whether they grew up in the country or the town, naive artists take images from their surroundings and give them new life through their art. Certain artists immerse themselves in peaceful pastoral landscapes.

In these worlds where time stands still, Grand-Mère Paris illustrates cherry-picking in vast expanses of greensward, whilst Canadian artist, Anne-Marie BOST shares her love of the countryside through a staggered composition which permits her to treat several of her preferred subjects : outdoor games, farm animals and even the sea, glimpsed in the distance.

While scenes from country life appear to pass by in slow motion, towns and cities abound with intense activity where an atmosphere of bustle and fuss reigns.

Naive artists allow us to share their daily routine through scenes of urban life, some treated in a realistic manner, others more stylistically. Here are busy boulevards filled with passers-by and traffic, city-dwellers waiting for a bus during rush hour, children on the way to school and shoppers dashing in and out of boutiques.

Within the fresh, gaiety of her stitched cloth, Ninette VAN VUCHELEN depicts the Sao Paulo favelas, while other artists lead us into the city centres of Paris, Montreal and elsewhere...

MARKETS

In the market scenes we enter an animated universe where the bright colours of fruit and vegetable stalls mingle with the vitality of the teaming crowd.

Colourful paintings represent snow-covered Christmas markets, the fish market in Athens, travelling salesmen, boutiques on busy shopping streets. An embroidery by Soledad SAN MARTIN depicts a flower market.

In this room, various different techniques are on show, notably painting under glass, embroidery and oil paint applied with a syringe which has a texture similar to that of embroidery.

NIGHT LIFE

After nightfall, sleeping cities reveal a nocturnal painter, a couple dancing the tango in the street and even a Don Juan playing a serenade for his lady love. In the space of an evening, the night also offers its inhabitants magical spectacles such as the firework display by Viviana PICHTOWNIKOW or the fairy-tale atmosphere of the fairground.

The world of the night is also that of theatres, cabarets and dance halls, this is a much more intimist universe. Music and dance prevail in these magical places where professionals or amateurs offer their guests an unforgettable time. Here in dim, muffled surroundings are numerous performances and activities designed to give the greatest of pleasure to spectators and actors alike.

DREAMS AND NAIVE SURREALISM

Here Art is perceived by naive artists as a means of escape from the world which surrounds them, enabling them to recreate imaginary universes in which they can express themselves.

Their imagination surpasses the imaginable, spills into the fantastic, the supernatural and the strange and puts them on a par with the Surrealists, if not always intellectually, certainly in terms of the extravagant forms they create. Thus Ivica PROPADALO gives us an ethereal “equestrian ballet” whilst Jean-Louis SENATUS leads us into heavenly lands...

The works presented in this room relate the dreams and preoccupations of naive artists. They attract our attention through both their symbolism and their authenticity.
