Exhibition of works from the Bages Museum Collection 7th September – 28th November 2004

The International Museum of Naive Art is delighted to present a selection of works from the Bages Museum Collection. Situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, the museum has been closed to the public for the last two years. In September of this year, the International Museum of Naïve Art in Vicq took on the responsibility for the entire Palais des Naifs collection which comprises around 500 works.

A brief history of the Bages Museum

In a tribute to the Bages Museum, the International Museum of Naïve Art is showing 20 or so works, collected by the Palais des Naïfs over the past ten years, in the mezzanine space at the museum in Vicq.

For this first presentation of the Bages Collection we have chosen to exhibit works by artists which the two museums have in common, notably André DURANTON, Mahmoud SOUA, Mady DE LA GIRAUDIERE, Félicia DUCROQUET, Gorki BOLLAR, Tito LUCAVECHE and Josip GENERALIC ...

This approach provides a general overview of creation by international artists and fresh ways of interpreting the messages they offer through their work.

We begin by presenting one of the collections most emblematic works, painted by none other than the founder of the Bages Museum, Françoise JAVO.

The Child and the Magic Spells
Séverine CODINA

"The child dreams with his eyes open.
He escapes to his own universe.
For him the earth is no more than a rose.
He blends with the wind, in osmosis.
At the centre of time, static and yet in motion,
everything flows and slows down movement.
The child tames birds, he needs only his heart,
not words.
In the hollow of his hand he holds a shell
from which pours an endless stream of living,
jewel fish whose brilliance quivers and sparkles.
The child with sea-blue eyes, brown skin and silver hair,
gives himself up to magic, to the rhythm of his life
in the sunset sky."
